Windows 7 error upon saving, “Another user may have opened the file…”

If you open an existing file by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer, and then try to save it, but receive the error that states something like “the file cannot be saved because another user may have opened the file”, look to see if you have a checkbox that is selected in Windows Explorer just to the left of the file name.

If you do, that’s the culpret. The checkbox get selected even if you’ve double-clicked a file to open it. And, when it’s selected it’s actually opened behind the scenes whether the Windows Explorer “Preview” option is on or not.

The solution is simply to turn off the checkbox feature. It’s only purpose is to make selecting multiple files easier, which can be achieved just as easily by using Ctrl+Click (to select individul files) or Alt+Click (to select a range).

This is how you can turn off the checkbox feature:

  1. Open the Control Panel. (Start ->Control Panel)
  2. In the Address Bar, click on the right-arrow just after “Control Panel”, and select “All Control Panel Items”.
  3. Double-Click “Folder Options”.
  4. Select the “View” tab on the Folder Options window.
  5. Un-check “Use checkboxes to select items”.

Also, check “Always show menus.”, this makes it easier to access the folder options in the future through a top menu in Windows Explorer.

How to change folder options in Win7, Vista

How to Make a Custom Stamp in Acrobat

http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/livecycle/lc_custom_stamp_tip.pdf

Obama: “You didn’t build that”.

Obama: “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Obama said this at his 07/13/12 Roanoke, Virginia speech and it isn’t sitting well with me as a business owner!

While I totally agree that cooperative efforts are the free market, each one of those cooperative efforts (with customers, suppliers, vendors, colleagues, and lenders) that I need to be successful …also represents individual entrepreneurial initiative as well.

Interdependency and individual initiative are not mutually exclusive because interdependency is the relationship of multiple individuals’ initiative.

Make no mistake Mr. President, with God’s blessing, I HAVE built all of my businesses over the years – I HAVE put it all together. Mr. President, my God given smarts & talents HAVE been essential! My working harder than many others HAS been essential! Without me, there would have been no business and therefore, no jobs created, no employee wages paid, no payroll taxes paid, no service provided to others, no income tax paid, and no expenditures paid to other businesses, all incrementally driving the economy.

I totally recognize and value the need for government (at a certain level), but you are trying to minimize the importance of personal initiative as the key to an organization’s success.

Personal initiative drives our country’s economy. You minimize personal initiative in an effort to convince the people to change our free market America into a socialist one through equal distribution for all. After all, if we’re all the same, shouldn’t we have the same? We’re all created by God equal in value, but we’re not all the same in terms of function (desires, talents, abilities, initiative, etc.).

You clearly don’t understand what’s best for the people. Government certainly doesn’t know best. Government doesn’t earn and create, it spends the tax on what it’s people earn from creating and working. In fact, our government has spent far more than the tax on what the people have earned and will earn from creating and working for a long, long time into future generations.

How does devaluing personal initiative motivate people create and work more to drive the U.S. economy (and pay off the huge national debt)?

Don’t you see Mr. President, more government is not the answer to our country’s problems or mine specifically?

You are eroding at the very core principals of the United States and putting our country in extreme jeopardy. Please stop and go elsewhere if you want to live in and lead a socialistic state.

How to Change Outlook “Map It” to Google

How to change Outlook’s “Map It” to Google (and to customize to display driving directions).

For Office 2010, the regisrty path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Options\General

I had to add a registery key “General” under “Options”. Then add a “String Value” type key under “General” with the name “MapScriptURL“.

For just the map, use the value:
http://maps.google.com/?q=<0s>, <1s>, <2s>, <3s>, <4s>

If you want a start and endpoint (driving directions), use the value:
http://maps.google.com/?saddr=street,city,state,zip,country&daddr=<0s>, <1s>, <2s>, <3s>, <4s>

Caution, the registry is a tricky area to workin and potentially can mess things up in your computer quickly. We assume no risk with this advice. We can perfrom this service for you remotely.

Printing Issues on Mac Connected to Remote Desktop

HP LaserJet 4350 PS driver is used for the printer redirection. It must be installed from Windows Update or a previous release than Server 2008 R2 to work. Reportedly, the driver from HP will not work for this purpose due to some font issues.

Use credit memos, bill credits – not discounts

Customer Discounts (applied on the Receive Payments window) and Vendor Discounts (applied on the Pay Bills window) are effective and efficient ways to discount what your customers owe you and what you owe to your vendors.
With vendors, the discounts are even more effective when you use date-driven terms because QuickBooks either will automatically apply the discount or automatically calculate the discount, depending on the settings in your Company-level preferences.
However, there are some drawbacks to using these discounts – and some advantages to using Credit Memos and Bill Credits instead.
Customer and Vendor discounts do not allow you to select an Item. Since you cannot use an Item, QuickBooks will not reflect the discount on item based reports like the Sales by Item Summary report and the Job Profitability Summary/Detail reports. QuickBooks also will not include customer discounts (which are reductions in income) on sales tax reports like the Sales Tax Revenue Summary report and the Sales Tax Liability report. If you use a Credit Memo or Bill Credit, you can either create a separate item to track the discount or you can use regular sales items so the discount will be reflected in the overall profitability for that item.
